On the way to my office I told Di about my mobile and she confirmed that she will get the number lock. She even gave me her ATM card to get a new one. But she had set a budget constraint for me. Nevermind, atleat I will have a new mobile.
As I entered the office I saw my co-intern Alpa Raichura, was waiting for me with a bundle of files. While I was signing the register at the reception she came to me.
‘Where the hell were you and what’s wrong with your phone?’ She asked at her lowest volume.
‘U look good today’, I said to amuse her.
‘Vyom, Why on this earth you never get serious? Chief wants to see you’, she said worriedly
‘Is everything okay? I was worried now.
‘I guess’, she said
I went to see what the matter was. As I entered the room I saw our chief staring at me.
He exactly looked like a lion drooling over his prey.
‘Come in, Vyom…take your seat’, he said
I got inside his cabin. Our chief Mr. Navin Aggrawal was the senior legal consultant of the firm. Looks wise he never deserved to the position he holds. He was short, fat, stout, and black in colour. And it’s worth mentioning that his head was full of black hairs….I always use to amaze whether it’s real or he wears a wig.. Whatever I took the seat.
‘I never noticed your full name, Vyom’.he said with an horrifying expression
Navin has always been horrible for the interns. He was known for this behavior.
‘Sir is there any problem with my name. Because now if I change it. I have to follow otherwise a long and stupid procedure’. I didn’t know why I spoke all those rubbish.
‘Ha-ha...It’s not like that Vyom I was not knowing that your father is judge at state high court.’
‘Ohh...well I never thought that it’s worth mentioning during the internship’. I was unable to figure out where this conversation was heading to.
‘Vyom...I have a disputed property nearby to your place. I hope your father can help me. It’s a building built on ten acres of land.’ he said in meek voice.
Ahha...Now I was enjoying the conversation. I wanted to kick his ass and ask to give the whole building as compensation for torturing me.
‘Disputed building or disputed land?’, I asked
‘You are young enough to understand these technicalities and legal issues. Don’t forget that you have just completed your 1 year in a law institution’. He shouted
‘ My apology for that sir…but let me remind you, I come from a National Law School of the country and it were you five minutes before asking for my Dad’s help. Perhaps I know you want his number that I’ll provide you tomorrow as I am not carrying my phone with me. Anything else, Sir?’
I knew I have screwed him up totally and my upcoming days in this office will never remain so easy.
‘No, u can leave and Mr.Vyom Malhotra you are a bright student. Use your quality in productive and constructive stuff.’ He turned and signaled me to leave.
I thought in my mind…I know I am bright but I’ll prefer to be called as PERFECT.
Alpa came to me running." Is everything okay? Is he satisfied with the reports? I was so scared. "
‘U are worried about me. How sweet of you.’ I said playfully
‘Overall you look great...I mean good’, I knew I was being flirty.
She gave me a frowned look.' Why you always try to hit on me? U know I already have a boyfriend.’
‘Why don’t you hit back and try to mix it up, C’mon, Alpa, .we are good friends...rite’.
‘Yeah...Just GOOD FRIENDS...And now let’s get back to work. Any feedback about the reports?’
‘I guess they are perfect!!! As you prepared it. And thanks, you saved me.’
She smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear which made her look pretty. Thank you was just for courtesy as I was the best researcher among all the interns. We carried with our work when I checked my mail. It was from Vidisha Di. She had got a new mobile for me and confirmed about my number. I mailed back saying ‘I love her’.
It was lunch time. I went to Alpa’s cubicle. While having lunch my thoughts were only filled with Pratiksha. Suddenly Alpa waved her hand in front of me. Getting distracted I asked her for this irritating behavior. Presenting a sheepish smile she said.’ You are the topper of your batch’.
‘Yes...So??’ I said
‘See…the thing is that, if I was not involved with Rahul, I would have considered you.’
‘Stop kidding Alpa, I am halfway to frame the report.’ I gave a fake reply.
‘Were you really thinking about reports??? I highly doubt that’. She smiled and continued‘You really don’t have a girl in your life or you broke up?’
I liked the way she sounded concerned about me.
‘Actually I was dating this girl. But I broke up’. I said showing a pic of a beautiful and charming girl from my fb friend list.
‘But why did you break-up? She looks so stunning’. She was shockingly surprised.
‘Things didn’t work out between us. She was not of my type. ‘I said. I was trying to sound real as I was all faking these stuffs.
‘So till now u don’t have anyone else. Poor you.’ I smelled the sarcasm she intended while she spoke.
‘NO.I don’t...What’s the big deal?’
‘ I am really surprised Vyom, you are the topper of your batch, you a NLU-ite .You don’t look that bad, your sis is working is one of the biggest law firm, your parents are settled at high ranks…and still don’t have a girlfriend…that’s too bad for you’. Her puppy face made her hug-able.
Being a NLU-ite it was never such a big thing to have high rank able parents. Most of the students use to share this fame. But anyways it was never helpful in getting a girl. Moreover it never clicked my mind why I DESPERATELY wanted to fall for someone.
‘I know, but don’t worry, let the juniors come, I definitely find somebody very hot’. I said
‘Sure...U will get someBODY who will be really hot. And I guess even after our internship we will remain good friends’. She chuckled
I noticed her extra stress over the word ‘Body’. If we boys think something dirty it becomes an issue. Unproved allegations are levied on us to sue us. And girls have always been a symbol of purity. This is our superb society.
‘Just good friends…don’t you think I deserve something better?’ I winked back
‘Fuck off…that’s the best thing you deserve’, I got an expected reply from Alpa as she got up from her seat after completing the lunch.
Alpa was not a law student. She was a interning for her C.S. course. She was pretty good and soft in terms of speaking. And when I say good means it’s not ironical. But nobody ever tried to mess up with her. Since the whole office was aware of her intolerable foul language which she use to have with Rahul (her guy).
While leaving I headed towards ALPA…with a naughty look in my eyes I asked, ‘hey…u said if Rahul was not there in your life---’
I was cut by her,'Sorry Vyom...But in that case I would have to think thrice to go out with you. In future you will be a LAWYER. And remember, LAWYERS CANNOT BE LOVERS.’ That’s all Alpa said leaving me totally blank and shocked.
